Oakland, Calif. -- The world didn't end on May 21 as he said it would, but that hasn't stopped preacher Harold Camping of Oakland's Family Radio from coming up with the new date of October 21 for the apocalypse. PETA has dispatched two lovely "angels" to the city to deliver a message on the signs they'll be holding on the eve of the end of days: "It's Never Too Late to Go Vegan" and "Let Us Give You a Taste of Heaven." They'll also hand out free, delicious vegan treats. The action aims to encourage believers and nonbelievers alike to stop eating animals.

When:   Thursday, October 20, 12 noon

Where:  Intersection of Broadway and 12th Street, Oakland

"Animals on factory farms and in slaughterhouses face an apocalypse every single day," says PETA angel Sunny Subramanian. "We can't control the forces of human violence that seem to take root all around us, but we can help stop violence against animals simply by not eating them."

Chickens, fish, cows, and pigs feel pain and fear just as intensely as the animals who share our homes do, yet they are abused in ways that would be illegal if dogs and cats were the victims. On today's factory farms, chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they're still conscious, piglets are castrated and have their tails cut off without being given any painkillers, and cows are hung upside down and are often skinned while they're still able to feel pain. On the decks of fishing boats, fish suffocate or are cut open while they're still alive.
