Philadelphia — Visit a typical NFL stadium concession stand these days and you're likely to notice that among all the greasy meat burgers and high-fat hot dogs is a growing number of delicious and healthy meatless options. So with the 2011 pro season hitting the midway mark, it's time for PETA's fourth annual list of the top five most vegetarian-friendly stadiums in the NFL.
Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, has captured top honors for the second year in a row after adding new vegan items to its menu and contracting a vegetarian food truck to attend at least one of their games this season. The concession stands offer a superb seitan (made from plant protein) brisket, "meaty" mock steak and "chicken-steak" sandwiches, veggie dogs, two kinds of veggie burgers (one made from black beans and one made from vegetables), a light veggie wrap, and other vegan options. Fans in the premium dining areas also enjoy grilled vegetable hoagies and hummus and pita chips.
Recapturing the number two spot is the Oakland Raiders' O.co Coliseum. Animal- and health-friendly foods include veggie dogs and burgers, vegetarian burritos, and a delicious vegetarian burrito bowl. Chipotle black-bean burgers, grilled portobello mushroom sandwiches, hummus, salads, crudités, and fresh fruit are available in the premium dining areas.
Rounding out the top five are Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers), which offers the Packers faithful meatless bratwurst, veggie burgers, peanutty dan dan noodles, quinoa, warm black-eyed pea salad, and much more; Gillette Stadium (New England Patriots), where Pats fans can enjoy veggie dogs and burgers, a mouthwatering vegetable gyro, and more; and Georgia Dome (Atlanta Falcons), which features veggie dogs and burgers, vegetables with hummus, grilled vegetable pasta salad, and PB&J sandwiches for the kids, among other delicious options. Honorable mentions go to Qualcomm Stadium (San Diego Chargers), CenturyLink Field (Seattle Seahawks), Candlestick Park (San Francisco 49ers), and Ford Field (Detroit Lions).
"Why get penalized with clogged arteries and unwanted pounds when a great-tasting, protein-packed veggie burger will do the trick?" asks PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "After all, the best way to improve your health, help animals, and protect the environment is to throw the flag on meat and enjoy energy-boosting vegetarian fare."
