San Francisco -- Visit a typical NFL stadium concession stand these days and you're likely to notice that among the greasy meat burgers and high-fat hot dogs is a growing number of delicious and healthy meatless options. So with the 2011 pro season hitting the midway mark, it's time for PETA's fourth annual ranking of the most vegetarian-friendly stadiums in the NFL. O.co Stadium, home of the Oakland Raiders, and the San Francisco 49ers' Candlestick Park have grabbed the number two spot and an honorable mention, respectively.
O.co Stadium, which also captured second place in last year's ranking, offers the Raiders faithful an array of health-, animal-, and Earth-friendly vegetarian options. Veggie dogs, veggie burgers, meatless burritos, and a veggie burrito bowl are available at the concession stands, and chipotle black-bean burgers, grilled portobello mushroom sandwiches, grilled vegetables, hummus, salad, crudités, and fruit can be ordered in the premium dining areas. Candlestick Park also has a good selection of meatless meals and snacks, including the ever-popular veggie dogs, veggie burgers, and vegetarian burritos.
"With the Raiders showing signs of turning things around, now is a perfect time for fans to turn their health around by enjoying low-fat, protein-packed, delicious vegetarian meals," says PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "And Niners fans can sit back, relax, and enjoy a couple of delicious veggie dogs while watching their favorite team run away with the division."
Thanks to its "chicken-steak" sandwich and adding a superb seitan brisket along with even more vegan options to its menu, the Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field has clinched first place for the second year in a row. Rounding out the top five winners are Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers), Gillette Stadium (New England Patriots), and the Georgia Dome (Atlanta Falcons), which secured the number-five spot. The other stadiums that received an honorable mention are Qualcomm Stadium (San Diego Chargers), CenturyLink Field (Seattle Seahawks), and Ford Field (Detroit Lions).
