San Diego -- Holding signs that read, "Wear Your Own Skin" and "Think Ink, Not Mink," a racy group of PETA supporters will display their tattoos outside the Body Art Expo in downtown San Diego on Saturday. Their point? Body art is a fashion statement, but people who wear fur are decades behind the times—both in their sense of style and in their attitude toward animals. The action is the latest salvo in PETA's "Ink, Not Mink" campaign.
When: Saturday, November 19, 12 noon.
Where: Corner of C and First streets, San Diego
"Let's face it: Ink's hot—fur's not," says PETA campaigns manager Ashley Byrne. "The only thing that fur says about a person's taste is that she or he has none."
Each year, millions of minks, foxes, coyotes, rabbits, and even dogs and cats are bludgeoned to death, electrocuted, strangled with wire nooses, or skinned alive—all in the name of fashion. For every cuff, collar, piece of trim, or coat made from real fur, an animal suffered a miserable life and an agonizing death.
A growing list of celebrities—including Dave Navarro, Tommy Lee, Chester Bennington, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Ami James—have doffed their duds to show off their body art in support of the campaign. (Photos are available.)
Many top fashion designers and retailers—including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J.Crew, and Forever 21—are 100 percent fur-free.
