Washington, D.C. -- Wielding clubs and draped in animal skins donated by former fur-wearers, PETA members will gather in Georgetown on Friday to encourage holiday shoppers to stay out of the Stone Age by leaving fur off their shopping lists. The action will be one of many held throughout the country to mark Fur-Free Friday—the day after Thanksgiving and the busiest shopping day of the year.
When: Friday, November 25, 3 p.m. sharp
Where: Wisconsin Avenue N.W. and M Street N.W., Washington, D.C.
"In the 21st century, there's no excuse for slaughtering animals and throwing their skins on our backs," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "By sticking to stylish and warm fur-free fabrics, shoppers can show that they're in touch with fashion and compassion."
Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives in tiny, filthy cages until workers kill them by poisoning or anally electrocuting them or by breaking their necks.
Many top fashion designers and retailers—including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J.Crew, and Forever 21—are 100 percent fur-free.
