Bikinied Beauties Urge Seattle Drivers to Dump Artery-Clogging Meat and Go With Clean Vegan Energy

Seattle -- Wearing nothing but bikinis made of strategically placed lettuce leaves and holding signs that read, "Recharge Your Batteries—Go Vegan," a pair of PETA Lettuce Ladies will hand out free soy jerky at the Third Avenue electric vehicle charging station in Seattle on Thursday. The lovely duo's point? That besides being bad for your health and murder on animals, meat and other animal products are responsible for water pollution, land degradation, and greenhouse-gas emissions on a massive scale. The action coincides with the opening of many electric vehicle charging stations along Interstate 5 in Washington and Oregon.

According to the Environmental Defense Fund, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon-dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads. Researchers at the University of Chicago determined that switching to a vegan diet is 50 percent more effective at countering climate change than switching from a standard car to a hybrid vehicle.
"In a time of rising concern for the environment, we're going the extra mile to help eco-conscious motorists realize that going green begins with what's on your plate," says sultry Lettuce Lady Hayden Hamilton.
