Chicago -- Wearing little more than bunny ears and cottontails and holding signs that read, "Only Animals Should Wear Fur," a pair of PETA beauties—including Illinois native and Playboy Playmate Crystal McCahill—will be in the heart of Chicago's swanky downtown shopping district on Thursday. Their point? That buying fur supports one of the cruelest industries on the planet, so Christmas shoppers should cross fur off their lists.
When: Thursday, December 15, 12 noon–1 p.m.
Where: Intersection of N. Michigan Avenue and E. Huron Street (near Elan Furs), Chicago
"I'll gladly bare my skin in the cold if it will help save animals' skins," says PETA's Tracy Patton. "With so many stylish and toasty alternatives to fur available, there's no excuse to harm a hair on a real bunny's back."
PETA and McCahill want consumers to know that rabbits and other animals on fur farms spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy cages before they are poisoned, gassed, or anally electrocuted. In China—now the world's largest fur exporter—animals, including cats and dogs, are sometimes skinned alive.
Many top fashion designers and retailers—including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J.Crew, and Forever 21—are 100 percent fur-free.
