Biloxi, Miss. -- Twenty-five pit bulls suffering from injuries that authorities believe are related to dogfighting—including one dog with bite marks to the head that were so severe that his jawbone and skull were visible—were found restrained by heavy chains in a wooded area behind two vacant trailers on Hudson Krohn Road. Five dogs were immediately taken to a veterinarian, three of whom were euthanized because of the severity of their injuries. Police have yet to identify the person or persons responsible for their abuse. That is why PETA is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprit or culprits.
"Dogfighting is as much an issue of community safety as it is animal abuse," says PETA Director Martin Mersereau. "This activity is almost invariably associated with drugs, weapons, and illegal gambling. Research in psychology and criminology reveals a consistent pattern of cruelty to animals among perpetrators of violence toward humans."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Biloxi Police Department at 228-392-5052.
