Lookout Mountain, Tenn. — The competition to be named PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door is heating up, and a Lookout Mountain couple, Kate and Scott Veltkamp, are two of 20 contestants (10 male and 10 female) to advance to the final round. Two winners (one female and one male) will be crowned PETA's Sexiest Vegetarians, and each will win a free trip to Maui.

"On average, vegetarians are slimmer and healthier than meat-eaters are—and they save more than 100 animals a year from factory farms, slaughterhouses, and fishing nets," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "One look at our radiant finalists proves that there's nothing sexier than compassion."

Kate, 24, went vegetarian in 2009 after a local news story about three men who killed and ate a dog got her thinking about the animals on her own plate. She went vegan a year later, and she credits her healthy diet with giving her a surge in energy and improved muscle retention. Kate is a commercial photographer, part-time model and actor, and full-time mother of a vegetarian daughter. She's trained in classical opera and loves to perform, hike, and cook.

Kate's husband, Scott, 28, went vegetarian two years ago on a challenge from his wife and has never looked back. He says that he lost 40 unwanted pounds and feels more energetic than ever. Scott is a Web designer and photographer and enjoys hiking, camping, and playing basketball and volleyball. He says that Kate is his vegetarian role model because she always stands up for her beliefs, including animal rights.
