Norfolk, Va. — In honor of National Nurses Week and all that nurses do to keep Americans healthy, PETA is helping nurses take care of their own health with a book giveaway. Ten randomly selected nurses who pledge to go vegan for 30 days will win copies of 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart: Boost Metabolism, Lower Cholesterol, and Dramatically Improve Your Health by Dr. Neal Barnard, the president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Everyone who enters will receive a free vegetarian/vegan starter kit.
"According to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians are less prone to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Once nurses experience these great health benefits for themselves, we're confident that they'll be singing the praises of a vegan diet to all their patients."
Any nurse residing in the U.S is eligible. Nurses can enter the contest by e-mailing NurseContest@peta.org before 4 p.m. (ET) on May 12. Winners will be notified via e-mail by May 31. See more details here.
Vegetarians and vegans are, on average, 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters, and they are less prone to numerous diseases. Their consciences are lighter too—every vegan saves more than 100 animals a year from suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats.
