Graves County, Ky. — After receiving dozens of calls from concerned citizens, PETA has posted an urgent action alert on its popular website urging visitors to immediately contact Graves County officials and demand that a search be launched immediately to locate two stray dogs who were reportedly shot by a convicted felon on work release with the county's animal control agency. According to news reports, residents of the Cedar Ridge subdivision called animal control after spotting two dogs who were apparently trying to escape floodwaters and looking for food. Once animal control officers arrived, a neighbor reportedly heard a gunshot followed by continuous yelping. The wounded dogs—a collie mix and a terrier mix—ran off, and officials have so far refused to search for the dogs, one of whom was reported to have sustained a bullet wound to the neck.

"By not even attempting to locate these two wounded dogs, Graves County and animal control are sentencing them to a slow, agonizing death," says PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch.

After learning of the incident, PETA cruelty caseworkers contacted animal control in an attempt to get more information and urge the agency to launch a search for the dogs. But all that PETA got was the runaround, as one agency after another refused to take action.
