San Diego -- Crammed together in a tank of "bloody" water, two nearly naked PETA members will sit outside the Association of Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisees Convention at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel to protest the abusive treatment of chickens killed for the fast-food chain. Other PETA members will hold signs reading, "Broken Wings & Legs" and "Scalded Alive." PETA's protest comes a week after Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders reached out to Grammy winners Lady Antebellum, who are scheduled to perform for the franchisees Thursday evening, urging the group to use its unique position to ask the company to make changes.

When:   Thursday, March 3, 12 noon

Where:  Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel, 1 Market Pl., San Diego

Because the voltage levels of electric stun tanks in U.S. slaughterhouses are kept at only a fraction of the level needed to render chickens insensible to pain, birds are usually paralyzed but still conscious when their throats are cut. Government studies show that birds feel pain after being shocked, even if they can't move. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, every year, millions of birds—who are still conscious and able to feel pain—are immersed in tanks of scalding-hot water that are intended to remove the birds' feathers after they are dead.

"We're heating things up to help customers see exactly how coldhearted KFC is when it comes to chickens," says PETA's Lindsay Rajt. "People flock to other restaurants when they learn that KFC is too cheap to make basic changes that would prevent birds from being scalded to death."
