Peosta, Iowa -- Decked out in pig costumes and riding in a convertible, two PETA members will appear outside of a forum in Iowa where President Obama and members of his cabinet are scheduled to be in order to educate onlookers about the need for a federal excise tax on meat. The PETA porkers' point? That meat is a leading cause of climate change and that it increases the risk of developing cancer and heart disease—driving health-care costs through the roof. PETA says that meat should be taxed at 10 cents per pound to offset its staggering costs, just as alcohol, tobacco, gasoline, and other items are subject to a "sin" tax.

When:   Tuesday, August 16, 11am

Where:  The car will be circling near 10250 Sundown Rd. (outside Northeast Iowa Community College), Peosta

A recent study found that going vegan is 50 percent more effective at fighting climate change than switching from a standard car to a hybrid model. Also, the American Dietetic Association has determined that vegetarians have lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters.

"The environmental and health problems caused by eating meat take a huge bite out of the U.S. budget," says PETA Director Lindsay Rajt. "Slapping a long-overdue tax on meat would save countless lives—including animals'."

PETA's "pigs" will appear at the White House Rural Economic Forum.
