New Orleans -- Wearing nothing but bikinis made from strategically placed lettuce leaves and holding signs that read, "Don't Break the Bank—Go Vegan," PETA's Lettuce Ladies will hand out free bean burritos at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets on Friday. The leafy lovelies' point? That one in five Louisiana residents is using food stamps, and PETA wants each of them to know that it's easy to eat cheaply and go green by kicking the meat habit and going vegan.

When:   Friday, November 18, 12 noon

Where:  The intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets, New Orleans

"New Orleans residents' love affair with meat is costing them an arm and a leg and making them unhealthy," says PETA Lettuce Lady Hayley Ray "The smartest thing that they can do for their health, the planet, and their bank accounts is to go vegan."

Protein-packed dried beans cost far less per pound than chicken, but unlike chicken and other meat, they are high in fiber and contain no cholesterol. Meat also has hidden costs. According to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians are less prone to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are, so people who go vegan are far less likely to go bust paying for Lipitor, chemotherapy, and insulin injections. The obesity epidemic, which has also been linked to meat consumption, costs the U.S. about 1 percent of its gross domestic product—twice as much as other developed countries. Moreover, raising animals for food is a leading cause of water pollution, land degradation, and the greenhouse-gas emissions responsible for climate change. And, of course, the meat industry is responsible for the daily suffering and terrifying deaths of billions of animals.
