Los Angeles -- Two Los Angeles–area eateries have each won a Libby Award from peta2, PETA's youth division. The sixth annual Libby Awards ("Libby" is for "liberation") honor animal-friendly people, businesses, and products.
- Favorite West
Coast Food Truck or Cart: Seabirds
Seabirds' menu changes regularly, but specialties include wasabi Brussels sprouts with sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, and sesame seeds; organic and gluten-free chili; beer-battered avocado tacos with fried avocado wedges, creamy cilantro-jalapeño sauce, red onions, and cabbage slaw; organic kale salad with blood orange and spiced walnuts (gluten- and soy-free); sweet-potato fries dusted with cinnamon salt and served with Seabirds' special dipping sauce; organic vegan cupcakes; and much more. Seabirds narrowly edged out Frankenstand (Los Angeles), Homegrown Smoker (Portland, Ore.), and Sunny Vibrations (San Francisco).
- Best Local
Restaurant: Veggie Grill
Veggie Grill starts with fake steak and faux fowl and then works its magic. Sandwiches include the Santa Fe Crispy Chickin', Carne Asada (grilled veggie steak marinated in Mexican spices with southwestern-spiced vegan mayo), Bayou Chickin' (lightly blackened Cajun-style "chicken"), Bali Bliss (Indonesian sautéed tempeh), Chipotle BBQ (marinated veggie steak), the incomparable V-Burger, and many more. There's also a full list of delicious starters, soups, and entrée salads. The Veggie Grill has seven locations with plans to open soon in Long Beach, and Portland, Ore. The other nominees included Gracias Madre (San Francisco), Vertical Diner (Salt Lake City), and The Wild Cow (Nashville, Tenn.).
"Seabirds and Veggie Grill prove that going vegan is the best thing you can do not only for your health, the environment, and animals but also for your taste buds," says peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg. "Their commitment to ethical eating and their respect for their customers shines through in every bite."

Winners were chosen by peta2 based on equal consideration of three factors: the number of votes received, the quality of the animal-friendly product or the nominees' enthusiasm for being animal-friendly, and feedback from the nominees' fans.
