Los Angeles -- Would you lock your dog in the car while you ran a quick errand? What about top Italian actor Elisabetta Canalis? To put a face on this life-and-death matter, the Italian beauty is starring in a brand-new PETA TV spot in which she wakes up to discover that she has been trapped in a car on a summer day. Sweating and gasping for air, Canalis struggles to unlock the doors and open the windows until she finally collapses. "Dogs can suffer from heatstroke and die in a matter of minutes when left in a car on a warm day," the ad explains. "In the summer, leave your dog at home."

"It's very important if you see a dog unattended inside a car that you don't leave the situation," says Canalis in an exclusive interview. "If it's too hot for us, it's definitely too hot for our dogs."

Every year, PETA receives reports of dogs who have died as a result of being left alone in a car on a warm day—even when the windows are left slightly open or the car is parked in the shade. On a relatively mild summer day, the temperature inside a shaded car can climb to more than 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Canalis is part of a list of celebrities—including Lea Michele, Paul McCartney, Charlize Theron, and Eva Mendes—who have teamed up with PETA to promote animal protection.
