Norfolk, Va. -- Today's baseball stadiums offer an ever-increasing array of healthy and delicious vegetarian food choices. So for the sixth straight year, PETA has ranked the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks in the minor leagues, and Durham Bulls Athletic Park has made the list at third place.
"Durham Bulls Athletic Park might host the minor leagues, but when it comes to the delicious health-, Earth-, and animal-friendly food offered at its concession stands, it's a major league player all the way," says PETA Associate Director Chris Holbein. "Even before the first pitch is thrown out, the Durham Bulls are a big winner in our book."
Leading off the lineup at Durham Bulls Athletic Park are the veggie sausages, veggie hot dogs, and black-bean burgers. Batting cleanup are the tofu burritos with black beans and pico de gallo, the taco salad, and more.
The Carolina Mudcats' home, Five County Stadium, has been awarded an honorable mention this year for its offerings, including its veggie burger, vegetable wrap, salad, and fresh fruit and vegetable platters.
Sliding into first place is Hammond Stadium, home of the Fort Myers Miracle, which serves vegetarian tacos, a vegan cheeseburger, and more. Coming in a close second is Frontier Field, home of New York's Rochester Red Wings, whose vegetarian specialties include vegan pizza, veggie dogs, and veggie burgers. Rounding out the top five minor league ballparks are Daniel S. Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks, and the Tulsa Drillers' ONEOK Field. Finishing in first place in the major leagues is the Philadelphia Phillies' Citizens Bank Park, whose barbecue veggie "Pit Beef," vegan chicken-steak, and faux-chicken patty sandwich put the Phils over the top for the fifth time in the past six years.
Each major and minor league team to make the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list will receive a framed certificate from PETA. For more information and to see the complete major and minor league rankings, please click here and here.
